- good lights except one problem Review by Jonny Fly
-
I have two of these lights and for the watts they pull they put out a lot of lights. The batch that my lights came from have issues with the UV diode. They went bad on both lights, but Gotham is being very cool and exanging mine for a 500 watt unit. Both 240s for one 500, not 2 240s for 2 500s, although I wouldn't complain. They have great customer service. I'm looking forward to trying one of their 2013 models. (Posted on 9/20/12)Price Value Quality - purely amazing Review by King Twist

I bought 2 of these and everyone was doubting what I said...well to say the least that same person is buying these off me and Im buying bigger ones/more of them to fill my grow room and not just hte closet! Little to know heat at all. in under 3 weeks your general strain grew 10'' cant wait to see what my good strains do!!! (Posted on 4/2/12)Price Value Quality - good buy Review by squarefodder

This is a great light. I have medicinal herbs growing plus tomatoes peas chives basil etc. You cant beat the value. These units will put off a little bit of heat, you may need to vent in a small grow space to keep temps in check. The light produces a beautiful magenta and should be approx 10 in from canopy. This company has very good customer service too. (Posted on 3/30/12)Price Value Quality - Great value for $$$ Review by Peter

Purchased this in March 2011 (Now March 2012) for my first grow after extensive research. Works great and produces an exceptional product. Hope to use it for years to come. (Posted on 3/20/12)Price Value Quality - Just got it, but pretty impressed for the $ Review by JCvettez06

Let's face it. LED lights are the future, provided the tech can keep up(getting better and cheaper) and nothing else comes along to trump it.Price Value Quality
I wanted to try some LED's to compare to some T5 HO fixtures I was using in flowering. HPS/HID won't work for me due to space/heat considerations.
I got 2 of the Blackstar 240's and upon arriving, seem like decent units.
Pros--put out a ton of light(wear sunglasses), seem like decent construction and have replaceable power supply units, which is evidently the part that usually breaks if something goes wrong. IE it's serviceable.
Cons-pulls about 120-130W per my KW meter. Now, this is fairly common that the 3w chips are driven at about 50-60% of their rating due to heat and lifespan issues. But it's confusing for end user. Also, no heatsinks under the fans, so this may or may not be an issue down the road.
All in all, for the $ I think they are a good value provided they hold up over time. Quality seems good/decent with some minor issues I'd rectify if it was up to me. Value is good, but knocking a point off as the true watts are not reflected or talked about in the ads. I think it should be.
Would I buy again? Yep, gonna order a couple more when I get some $ (Posted on 2/22/12) - positive Review by autolover

great for 2 plants. went from 8" to a bushy 3ft in five weeks. gives off very little heat but that has not been a problem for me. its doing a great job...upgraded from floresents, HUGE difference in growth rate. (Posted on 1/22/12)Price Value Quality - Whoa... Review by Katia

Whoa... I purchased this on a whim.. the site didn't even have dimensions on the size of the light... 8.25" x 16" if your wondering...This thing barely fit into my little grow space... (Posted on 11/4/11)Price Value Quality - Closet Power - Definitely Recommend Review by Cliff

Have had my Blackstar for several flowerings. Plants hardly use any water. The electric meter doesn't even know the light is on. It runs on pennies! No heat issues all this *hot* summer. Going for the 135 watt UFO next. Closet power!Price Value Quality

Man this Light is amazing for a light that pulls 180 watts this thing sure can produce. My plants just love it and the leaves are unlike I've ever seen they are way fatter than usual under this light. I aslo own the 180 watt advanced led grow light extreme flower 3w led's, and the biggest difference is that the AL light has a more full spectrum kinda of whiter but still very red, the BS 180 watt is very deep red almost magenta and works amazing about 10" from the canopy. I Love the efficiency. Hardly any heat at all.Price Value Quality
Cons:
Wish it came with a hanging kit
I wish it were advertised as a 180 watt light and not 240 watt, based on true power draw
I wish the fans where a teancy bit quieter
overall awesome light and relatively affordable, someday i hope to see a price closer to $1 per watt, true draw. (Posted on 10/8/11)
